Disruptive book design to deliver complex political reporting.
We Have a Game Changer was published by Daily Maverick to celebrate a decade of news reporting and journalism in an age of digital disruption and complex South African politics. It includes historical pieces that cover the story behind the stories. Staying true to the Daily Maverick medium and their philosophy around accessibility and freedom of speech, it was produced as a multi-format book.
We collaborated with development team, Electric Book Works, to create a beautiful print edition, a crafted ebook, and a mobile-friendly web book. A visual identity was developed for the product and a design system applied across all formats to ensure visually consistency. This enforces the product branding and reader experience, while also taking full advantage of the output format (digital versus print).
The product design is inspired by the editorial content which includes articles that reference pivotal moments in South African history. The concept of a timeline inspires the creative execution and defines the architecture of the product. For the print edition the contents page is expressed as an infographic-style timeline and the concept is carried through to the rest of the book in the application of the running heads. In the digital outputs the timeline defines the structure and design of the primary navigation and interactive menu.
The print production of the hard copy edition of the book is beautifully executed, resulting in a unique product which is intended as a collector’s item. The pages incorporate striking, full-bleed photography and carefully considered typography, making the long-form content an accessible read.
The digital version of the book is freely available to read online.
